Director James Cameron has an ambitious plan for the future of his 2009 blockbuster offering, Avatar, that almost seven years later is still the biggest opening ever worldwide.
Initially, Cameron planned for two more films to continue the fantastical journey of the residents of Pandora but after plotting with a team of screenwriters and what he describes as “some of the top artists and designers in the world”, the famed filmmaker is convinced that he has enough material to produce four more films.
Cameron is ready to embark on what might be his most spectacular undertaking yet as he prepares to deliver an even grander scope of storytelling.
‘We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic project, making four epic films, each of which stands alone but together forms a complete saga.”
Cameron is inspired by the need to retain the legitimacy of the theatrical experience, which has undoubtedly propelled his slew of highly successful films to unbeatable heights. His announcement also comes on the heels of tech entrepreneur, Sean Parker’s latest effort – Screening Room.
Parker is on the verge of minimizing the relevance of movie theaters by providing customers with the option of viewing same day releases in the comfort of their homes.
Cameron vehemently opposes the idea and assured theater owners that his upcoming gems will be produced exclusively for the luxury of the big screen treatment.
“Trust me, these are films that were designed to be seen in theaters and on the big screen first.”
The dates for release for all four films have been verified with the first of the bunch hitting theaters in 2018. The other three will be released around Christmas time – in 2020, 2022, and 2023.
