Nancy Drew is coming back to television and things are going to be very different this time around. CBS has ordered the pilot for a series that will be based on the starry-eyed sleuth who was always on the lookout for the next big mystery.
This time however, we will not be entertained by the blueprint that has guided the cult classic or even the movie that starred Emma Roberts back in 2007.
Glenn Geller – president of CBS confirmed that major changes are in place to give audiences an updated version of the title character.
The show will be called Drew and instead of a bubbly teen – we will be welcomed with a woman in her 30’s who works as a detective for the NYPD. She will retain her keen sense of observation as she’s recruited to solve crimes and give those around her reason to marvel at her innate skills.
But the changes don’t end there, according to
Variety – there is every reason to believe that the new Nancy Drew will not be Caucasian. Geller divulged this while discussing the show to the publication – stating that he would be “open to any ethnicity”.
This will be quite a detour when you consider that ever since Nancy Drew’s introduction back in 1930 – she has always been depicted as white even though her trajectory has shifted with the times.
Given the current need for more diversity both in television and film – this new revelation is a refreshing makeover and a much needed change towards a more progressive mode of programming.
No word yet on when the pilot will be added to the scheduling grid – but we’ll definitely keep a close eye on this one!
