Lamar Hurd, a Portland-based sportscaster seems to be poised to change the course of ABC’s main staple The Bachelor, thanks to his cheerleader and apparently loyal assistant Tammy who skillfully submitted an application to ABC.
She gushes about how adorable her boss is (which is easy to believe – look at him!) and why he would be the perfect candidate to usher in a new era of diversity for a franchise that seems opposed to the idea of featuring non-white Bachelors or Bachelorettes.
Of course Hurd was hesitant and against the idea but he eventually embraced the possibility of being the first African-American bachelor since the show’s inception.
So now it’s up to the producers to decide if it will be worth the gamble to explore a candidate who obviously represents everything they have spent almost a decade avoiding.
It will also be enlightening to know how the viewers will respond to Hurd, if he makes the cut, and of course there is the matter of how to populate the humbling abode accordingly without inspiring any racial innuendos.
It’s hard to say whether or not a non-white Bachelor will help rejuvenate the image of the show which suffered immensely under Ben Flajnik’s regime. But it wouldn’t hurt to see what’s over the rainbow.
It would certainly be anything but boring.
