The nominations for the 73rd annual Golden Globe were announced on Thursday morning and it is clear that streaming giant Nextflix is doing something right after garnering an impressive number of salutes in key categories including a nod to veteran actress and comedian, Lily Tomlin for her hilariously affecting turn on the hit show Grace and Frankie
Uzo Aduba continued her good luck streak by securing another nomination for her role in Orange Is The New Black.
Empire proved its viability nabbing a spot in the Best TV series category while Taraji P Henson was recognized for her delicious portrayal of no-nonsense Cookie Lyon thanks to her nomination for Best Actress in a TV Series.
Scandal failed to register in any of the slots but Viola Davis scored another mention for ABC’s How To Get Away with Murder.
Notably missing from the Best TV Series line up was Mad Men – despite a solid series finale, the critically-acclaimed show was virtually missing from all the major categories except Best Actor in a TV Drama which Jon Hamm secured.
It was a good day for actor Idris Elba who walked away with two nods in both TV and film. The British actor’s portrayal of the brooding and long-suffering Luther garnered him a nomination for Best Actor in a Mini-Series but the accolades also extended to his critically-hailed performance in Nextflix’s first ever feature film release, Beasts of No Nation. Interestingly enough director Cary Fukinaga was excluded from the Best Director list and the film also didn’t get recognized in the Best Picture category. Perhaps the dismal numbers at the box office did more damage than expected.
