Director Quentin Tarantino has built a successful career around his ability to be delightfully shocking and dramatically imaginative while all the while setting a standard for filmmaking that very few are able to adhere to which is the reason why he is part of the group of stylized storytellers that instinctively commands respect and adulation.
From Reservoir Dogs to Django Unchained to the upcoming The Hateful Eight – regardless of whether or not you dispute the method of delivery, there is no doubt that if you surrender his offerings – you will be anything but wowed.
But even talented film directors have feelings and when they see the opportunity to maximize their privileged status for good – chances are they will take it. This explains why Tarantino was front and center at a staged march last month in New York. The protesters were rallying against the ongoing police brutality against people of color.
The man who stunned us with the cult classic Pulp Fiction was quite vocal about his displeasure with men in uniform who use their power to intimidate and in most cases brutalize otherwise innocent victims.
His activism wasn’t received well by law enforcement across the country – especially after he publicly declared that they were ‘murderers” but based on the overwhelming evidence backed up by the growing number of deaths by police that seem to dominate the headlines daily – it isn’t too far from the truth.
Nevertheless – after being brought to ask by angry cops who have vowed to boycott his films until he offers an apology, Tarantino took the time to clarify his comments by explaining that his sentiments were directed toward the cops who make it their business to hunt and kill people of color for no valid reason.
But the damage was already done and presently – the outspoken filmmaker is waging a battle of wills with law enforcement all over the country and the only one who is standing in his corner is another established crusader and documentarian – Michael Moore.
Well, actually actor and comedian Jamie Foxx offered his support recently at the Hollywood Film Awards by encouraging his former collaborator to continue his quest for justice “Keep telling the truth. Keep speaking the truth, and don’t worry about none of the haters”.
Easier said than done as Moore can attest since he has basically spent his entire career exposing the evils that dwell within a carefully fractured system that is run by the exploitative moneybags who could care less about the lesser bequeathed populous. His upcoming film Where to Invade Next is his latest expose that will surely be another agonizing eye-opener.
But in the meantime he is supporting a fellow colleague who really needs it while he ponders why others in the industry are reluctant to do the same. He expressed his dismay and disappointment in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter where he praised Tarantino’s courageous stance and called out White Hollywood for timidly turning a blind eye.
“Has any white person in this town, in the industry, stood up for Quentin Tarantino?” “The white guy stuck his neck out there, and they’re trying to chop it off”.
Well, much of Hollywood has largely remained silent about the issue of police brutality so it’s no surprise that Tarantino is experiencing the silent treatment from his esteemed colleagues but one out of thousands isn’t bad – right?
The Hateful Eight is scheduled to hit theaters Christmas Day.
