The critics have spoken! Selma – the highly touted film that seems to be a godsend for those of us who are immersed in the trenches of racial strife is officially a raving success and worthy of all the praise and adulation.
Director Ava DuVernay has presented a masterpiece that will surely earn its place in the vault reserved for cinematic excellence. She has not only made history as the first woman of color to earn a Golden Globe nod for best director of a feature film, but she also managed to capture the elements of a well versed period in a way that captivates the soul and restores faith in the method of storytelling.
So many have tried but very few are able to distinctively present factual events in a stunningly affecting way. But thanks to DuVernay’s solid approach and more than capable cast – Selma rises to the occasion without aimlessly drifting or relying on mandated clichés.
David Oyelowo who embodies the role of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is spectacular in his delivery as he remarkably recalls a level of intimacy that is arrestingly valid. He is poised to be a front-runner for every nomination he receives this award season. Carmen Ejogo who is gracefully compelling as Coretta Scott King, has finally found the role that reveals her astute talent.
The supporting players are also key holders to a journey that will leave the moviegoers gratifyingly informed and spiritually rejuvenated. The stirringly haunting theme song Glory was a collaborative effort between John Legend and Common – and it is clearly the perfect accompaniment to a piece that plays so effortlessly without skipping a beat.
Selma should be required viewing not just for a paying audience but for future generations who will undoubtedly need the reference in order to fully grasp the urgency of a time that continues to leave its residue in warningly tragic ways.
