The people have spoken. After the big reveal back in April of the new Barbie doll that was created in the likeness of Selma director Ava DuVernay, who made history as the first African-American woman to receive a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director, it has now been announced that the doll will be available for purchase on December 6.
DuVernay made the confirmation via Twitter on Sunday, “Tomorrow this #AvaBarbie goes on sale for Christmas because enough folks asked @Mattel to do so. Wild + wonderful”.
The stunning doll is part of Mattel’s “Sheroes” series and was never intended for the pubic but fans of the famed filmmaker were adamant that Mattel accommodate their requests for the option to purchase the Barbie.
The iconic toymaker finally gave in after it was clear that the demand for a mass production was overwhelming.
It isn’t hard to figure out why so many are captivated – the doll aesthetically captures the essence of DuVernay – down to her signature hairstyle and the director’s chair.
The exciting news that there will be a limited supply of the doll will undoubtedly initiate chaos, as shoppers are on standby as they prepare to secure what will undoubtedly be the coolest Christmas gift ever!
But there still is no word yet regarding how eager consumers can go about making their purchase. Mattel seems to be keeping that information under wraps.
