Its hard to believe that Lisa ‘Left Eye” Lopes, the controversial and hard headed but beloved member of the once hottest girl band in the universe, TLC passed away tragically ten years ago today.
Lopes who was just weeks away from her 31st birthday was enjoying a much needed sabbatical in the wilds of Honduras, and ironically enough it seemed like she had finally found a way to calm down the flames that kept her fiery nature alive and sometimes out of control. Case in point, the chaotic incident that caused her to literally burn down the Atlanta mansion of her then boyfriend, Atlanta Falcon, Andre Rison in 1994.
Unfortunately she never got the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of her labor at the spiritual retreat. She and some of the members of a new band she was managing at the time were involved in a car crash when Lopes mistakenly veered her jeep off the road. Lisa Lopes died instantly but the other passengers though badly battered, survived.
The pint-sized talent was a swirling tornado both on and off the stage, but she was loved and respected all across the board. She peppered TLC with a enough sugar and spice to keep the trio glued and along with her comrades, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, she enjoyed immense success and all the bounties that came with it.
As we mourned Aaliyah’s ten-year anniversary last August, we cry once again for another songbird that has flown away from us too soon.
