Angela Bassett and Ruby Dee are ready to flex their acting muscles for Lifetime’s telepic Betty and Coretta, which begins production in September.
R&B Crooner Mary J.Blige has also signed on the dotted lines and will be portraying Betty Shabazz, the widow of Malcolm X. opposite Bassett’s Coretta Scott King, widow of Martin Luther King. Jr. Ruby Dee will provide the narrative dialogue laced with evidence of authority and familiarity since her character is also intimately connected to both women.
The story will focus on the aftermath of the assassination of each of the iconic figures and how their widows cope as single mothers and bearers of their legacies.
We are absolutely confident that both Angela Bassett and Ruby Dee will rise to the occasion and deliver award-winning performances. We can’t wait to see what Mary J. Blige has up her sleeve; her voice is undeniably hypnotic, but we will have to reserve judgment on her theatrics after we witness her embody the soul of Dr. Betty Shabazz. No pressure here!
