Oscar-nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe is best known for her heart-wrenching turn in Precious, the film that basically put her on the map and made her an instant household name.
Since then, she has been juggling numerous projects, including a recurring role on Showtime’s The Big C.
The New Year is upon us and we all have projects lined up waiting for us to dutifully tackle and Sidibe is no exception. On January 22nd, she will be the resident host for AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange.
AfroPoP has been on an explorative mission to expose the multi-layered journey and struggles of women who dwell in third world countries. Sidibe whose father is Sengalese, is the perfect ambassador for this exercise and joins forces with filmmakers, Eliachi Kimaro, Dara Kell and Christopher Nizza to present the situational component of an abused half Korean, half-Tanzanian (Eliachi Kimaro) as she tries to unearth her African roots. There are also other films in the series that are just as enlightening, including, Dear Mandela by Kell and Nizza which movingly divulges the determination of the women of the Durban shantytowns in South Africa as they challenge the present regime to carry out the promises that were made during the post-apartheid climate.
Sidibe is also able to draw from her background as a resource to help bring these particular stories to light and acknowledges the relevance of being in a position to help facilitate the process. “This season of AfroPoP helps give voice to those who truly need to be heard”.
Tune in to AfroPoP: The Ultimate Exchange when it premieres on the WORLD Channel on January 22 at 7pm.
