For the first time ever, a sitting president and first lady will be a part of South by Southwest – a festival of diverse creativity that has been going strong for the past 30 years.
President Obama and Michelle Obama
SXSW made the announcement on Wednesday by confirming that President Obama has been slated to attend the festivities which begin March 11 in Austin, Texas. His specific call of duty will be prompted by SXSW Interactive, where he will be the keynote speaker – assisted by Evan Smith, editor-in-chief of the Texas Tribune.
The conversation will be seeped in the topics of utmost concern – notably politics and climate change. President Obama will be tasked with the mission to encourage audience members to take advantage of the resources around them by applying their specific talents to propel change and progress.
First Lady Michelle Obama will also be busy gathering her troops and leading them to a better tomorrow. She is scheduled to speak at SXSW Music on March 16 – where she will lead the discussion around the Let Girls Learn initiative – a project that is geared towards ending the educational draught for the 62 million girls all over the world who are currently not attending school.
As mentioned earlier, SXSW is celebrating its 30th year and co-founder Rolan Swenson expressed why having the president and the first lady is particularly relevant given the current climate, “I can’t imagine a better way to celebrate our event’s 30th year than to welcome both the president and first lady to SXSW”. “As each new generation comes up at SXSW, they look for ways they can be of service, and it’s important to reflect and support that message. President and Mrs. Obama’s visit here will inspire attendees to that purpose”.
