‘Birth of a Nation’ Scheduled to Open Nationwide This Fall
After enjoying an immensely gratifying reception at the recently concluded Sundance Film Festival, where an intense bidding war culminated with Fox Searchlight emerging victorious after the studio dropped a whopping $17.5 million for rights of distribution, Nate Parker’s Birth of a Nation is charged and roaring to go.
The period epic about an American-born slave Nat Turner who leads the most successful uprising in history, stars Parker, who also wrote and directed – other major players include, Gabrielle Union, Armie Hammer, Aunjanue Ellis, Jackie Earle Haley, Penelope Ann Miller, Mark Boone Jr., and Aja Naomi King.
Birth of a Nation has been slated to open on Oct. 7 which will boost its chances to be in serious contention during awards season.
This is another victory for Parker, who gave up his acting career for two years in an effort to commit to the demands of ironing out all the logistics required to make the project of his dreams a reality.
The gamble and sacrifice paid off as critics are falling over themselves with praise for Parker and the film which will have to fend off the likes of Ben Affleck’s The Accountant, The Girl on the Train and Gambit for attention as they are all scheduled for same day releases.
But with heated momentum and a story that is firmly rooted in the fabric of historical significance, it’s hard to imagine Birth of a Nation being left in the dust.
