Super Bowl 2015 scored big in the ratings game as viewership was at an all time high.
The actual game between the Seahawks and Patriots was far from rapturous but adequate enough to keep nonchalant folks mildly occupied.
But the real action didn’t arrive until the official trailer for Furious 7 made its highly anticipated debut.
The trailer featured new footage with glimpses of Paul Walker who died in a car crash during production while on Thanksgiving break in 2013.
This time the high-octane franchise is taking things to a whole new level as the Fast Family is being threatened by the antics of Ian Shaw played by Jason Statham who is seeking to avenge the death of his younger brother Owen Shaw.
Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and the gang are also on a quest to set things right after learning of Han’s murder.
From the eye-popping images of cars parachuting from the sky and crashing into skyscrapers to the exotic locales that include Abu Dhabi and Tokyo, it is clear that this seventh installment directed by The Conjuring’s James Wan will deliver exactly what fans of the long-running franchise have come to expect and love.
This will undoubtedly be an emotional ride since this not only marks the last time Paul Walker will be featured but it will also be a somber goodbye to the character of Brian O’Connor who was an integral part of the franchise’s success. It has been reported that instead of killing him off, Brian will be retired. It isn’t clear how this will affect Jordana Brewster whose Mia Toretto was coupled with Walker’s character.
It is also not confirmed whether the studio intends to continue with the two other films that were scheduled to continue the ongoing saga considering the unexpected tragedy that irreversibly changed the scope of the franchise.
But based on the response to the trailer, it is safe to assume that Furious 7 will surpass all expectations and be a juggernaut at the box office, which will be due in large part to fans paying homage to Paul Walker.
The residue could carryover to additional films especially if the core characters remain in place but that is a risk Universal will have to calculate accordingly.
In the meantime the wait for Furious 7 ends when it open in theaters on April 3 2015.
