Many of us have our own gripes with the nominations that once again feature virtually no talent of color. The nominees are all white and annoyingly familiar. It’s particularly disappointing when you factor in the fact that there was the opportunity for a more diverse list – but clearly the Academy isn’t quite ready to tackle the issue of race and as such we are left with the conclusion that only the traditional favorites will be recognized – until whenever.
Perhaps that is why Diesel decided to praise the cast and crew of Furious 7 as well as the beloved late actor Paul Walker – for enduring what was evidently the most emotionally-tasking process imaginable.
He also gave props to Walker’s family for giving them permission to complete the film. Walker’s younger brothers – Caleb and Cody stepped in for their late brother which proved to be a godsend and was the primary reason why Furious 7 made it to the finish line.
The film made its debut in April 2015 and not only shattered the box office both home and abroad – but also set new records. Diesel was hopeful that based on the global response and the sentiment behind the film – the Academy would be inspired enough to recognize their efforts.
But not only was Furious 7 shut out of all the categories, but even the theme song – See You Again – compiled and brilliantly performed by rapper Wiz Khalifa and newcomer Charlie Puth didn’t get included in the best original song slot.
The affecting ballad that was specifically composed to honor Paul Walker was basically the song of the year in 2015 and has so far garnered three Grammy nominations including Song of the Year. It’s popularity and the the heartfelt theme should have made it a shoo-in for a nomination but it wasn’t to be.
Diesel’s Facebook message restored the power to the people – who voted Furious 7 as their Favorite Movie at the People’s Choice Awards.
It was also his way of reminding us that award shows don’t always get it right but when its up to the fans – those who deserve to win always do.
