Madonna has never been known for her ability to tone down her quest to give all of us something to talk about or in this case wonder about.
The woman who famously declared Dennis Rodman “hot” is in hot water for doing what most seem to think is radically inappropriate.
The 56-year-old entertainer is gearing up for the release of her album – Rebel Heart, and in the spirit of self-promotion, she utilized social media in an effort to drum up interest and quite possibly controversy.
Seems her idea of using the faces of revered figures in history in ways that question their dignity isn’t sitting to well with her followers and they are making that resoundingly clear.
The theme of the paraded collage is based on the celebration of those who were selfless in their dedication to seek justice for those who have been systematically devalued.
Madonna’s album cover depicts the singer in a closeup shot with black a string strewn all over her profile. This interestingly vivid display is extended to the likes of Martin Luther King Jr, Nelson Mandela, John Lennon and Bob Marley and those images were posted for all to see and critic.
The responses have been less than favorable, as they are deemed disrespectful and downright offensive.
Madonna for her part is most likely still harboring some resentment over the leaked songs from her unreleased LP. Once it was confirmed that like so many before her, she was unable to escape the inevitable she expressed her disgust by comparing her plight to “terrorism” describing it as “artistic rape”.
Her recent stunt with the weighty images definitely seems like a ploy to regain control of her product, which any Rebel would surely do.
In the midst of all the chaotic reaction to her artfully doctored pictures, the artist who made Voguing “a thing” attempted to explain the background story and mission. Next to Lennon’s copy was the caption – “I would like to thank all my fans for recreating my album cover with the Rebel Heart Ribbon on the faces of o many Great Hero’s. It shoes that you are also celebrating and in admiration of these great freedom fighters”.
In another caption, she goes on to reiterate that she is not aligning herself with the her chosen heroes but rather giving them props and recognition for what they represent. She dismissed the racist accusations by offering that she also posted the likeness of others who were not black.
In the end, it can’t be refuted that the objective behind the images was meant to draw attention to Madonna’s most anticipated album since we don’t know when. Her tactics may have backfired but it got lots talking and that is never a waste of time or space.
And it proves that the Queen of Pop will endearingly remain a Rebel at Heart.
Cat o’ nine tails? Flagellation? Guiliana is too thin nau… Her body’s subsisting on the fat from her brain.
There! I don’t have to play nice either!
