What a year it has been for Lupita Nyong’o! The Best Supporting Actress winner for 12 Years a Slave has literally been transported to the pages of a fairytale, thanks to her lovely disposition and gorgeous template. After consistently slaying the Red Carpet with her particular brand of effortless chic, it was only a matter of time that global cosmetic brands would come calling.
The Mexican-born Kenyan actress is now poised to join the ranks of Kate Winslet and Julia Roberts as the newest face of French beauty giant Maison Lancome. Nyong’o’s ads will start running in September, and no doubt they will capture the essence of what makes this stunner, irresistible, both on and off camera.
Nyong’o has was also tapped to represent Miu Miu in their spring 2014 campaign, which explains why she was front and center at their recent runway show.
As a woman of color with indelible ethnic features, it’s inspiring and quite a feat that Nyong’o has scored a lucrative contract with a cosmetic company that has traditionally utilized Caucasian women as their ambassadors. Clearly Nyongo is aware of how her latest venture could shift the global perception of beauty. In a statement released by Lancome, she expresses her appreciation and optimistic outlook “I am truly honored to join the Maison Lancome, a brand with such a prestigious history that I have always loved. I am particularly proud to represent its unique vision for women and the idea that beauty should not be dictated, but should instead be an expression of a woman’s freedom to be herself”.
Nyong’o is undoubtedly the instituted mascot for women of color, particularly women of African descent, and as she carries the torch with brilliance and composure, hopefully she will be able to share the spotlight with other worthy contenders.
