The nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards were announced Tuesday morning in Hollywood by two of the industry’s rising stars, John Boyega who will be seen in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Elizabeth Olsen, star of Avengers: Age of Voltron.
The list of nominees includes circuit darling, Carol, which has been generating tons of buzz even before it made its official debut. The film stars the always reliable Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara – with both actresses securing a nod in the Best Female Lead category. The film also garnered a Best Feature nom and director Todd Haynes was also recognized in the Best Director slot.
Another expected name to appear on the list is Brie Larson who is currently making waves after her hauntingly affecting performance in The Room.
But even more gratifying is the respect that is being paid to Netflix’s most ambitious offering to date – Beasts of No Nation – the film starring British actor Idris Elba and directed by the ever capable Cary Fukunaga.
Elba’s towering performance earned him a nomination in the Best Supporting Male category and Fukunaga deservedly got a nomination in the directing slot. Abraham Attah also scored a Lead Actor nomination. The film is also competing for The Best Picture trophy which validates the likelihood that it will be feted at The Academy Awards.
This is a major triumph for Netflix and producers , Elba and Fukunaga – despite the wearied box office reception – clearly the positive reviews helped propel the film to promising heights.
The ceremony will take place on Feb. 27 – the day before the Oscars and will televise live on IFC – beginning at 2PM PT /5PM ET
