The wait is finally over for those you who have spent the entre summer waiting diligently for Sparkle to hit the theaters. The remake of the 1976 starrer opens this weekend and the Hollywood premiere last night was a bittersweet affair as the well-deserved celebration was laced with a certain level of nostalgia.
The appearance of Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina and mother, Cissy Houston, served as a touching tribute to her budding legacy, only magnified by her absence.
Houston’s death this past February was both tragic and controversial due to the state in which she was found and the supporting evidence that proved she was battling addiction to drugs. But there is no visible evidence of a troubled soul in the new film that opens this weekend.
Sparkle has been garnering favorable reviews based on the outstanding performances of the cast that also includes, Jordin Sparks, Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter, Derek Luke, Ceelo Green and Omari Hardwick. The story centers on three Harlem raised sisters whose angelic voices get them noticed and takes them on a high-voltage journey filled with excitement, tragedy and reconcilement. Houston’s turn as the loving but firm matriarch is effectively touching and is matched by the magical trio (Sparks, Ejogo, and Sumpter) who each embody their roles like seasoned pros.
It’s a testimony to the array of talents that populate this film and also the perfect way to honor o a woman who is the true definition of what it means to Sparkle.
