If the cover art is any indication of what to expect – then we are definitely in for a treat when the Queen of Cool – Santigold, launches her third album, 99 Cents, on Jan. 22nd.
It’s been a long wait since we heard from the Philadelphia native whose whimsical yet provocative delivery has garnered a cult following. Her last effort – 2012’s Master of My Make-Believe was an epic collage of reinforced goodness as it sealed the foundation of an effortlessly exploratory artist whose kinetic renderings recall the equally alluring supplements of Bjork.
Photographer Haruhiko Kawaguchi worked with Santigold on the cover design, which features her packaged up tightly with some of her prized possessions. This is a visual illustration of Santigold’s summation of the times we currently inhabit. ‘We have no illusion that we don’t live in this world where everything is packaged”. “People’s live, persona; everything is deliberate and medicated. It can be dark and haunting and tricky, and freak us out, but it can also be silly and fun and we can learn to play with it”.
It looks like she has chosen to use her keen observations to help fuel her highly anticipated LP, which features collaborations with the likes of Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij and the creative talents behind Sky Ferreira and Charli XCX.
While we wait to be knocked over by the intensity of her upcoming bag of tricks – we can sample the sweetness with the awesomely packaged single that she generously shared with her die-hard fans – Can’t Get Enough of Myself, a self-imposed love fest that captures the soaring tempos and lively lyrics that we have come to love and admire.
Enjoy!
