Prison Break actor Wentworth Miller is opening up about past personal struggles with depression that led to his weight gain back in 2010 – when he was out of the spotlight and trying to cope with the symptoms associated with suicidal tendencies.
Miller was compelled to share his story when he stumbled upon a circulating meme bombarding the Internet that features him in two phases. One shows him fit and trim and the other depicts him in a red-T-shirt looking visibly heavier.
As expected the Internet trolls had a field day ripping the actor apart – forcing him to turn to his Facebook page in an effort to address the subject in an affectingly mature way that will no doubt shed light on the crippling and sobering reality of depression.
“First and foremost, I was suicidal, this is a subject I’ve since written about, shared about. But at the time I suffered in silence. As so many do. The extent of my struggle known to very, very few. Ashamed and in pain, I considered myself damaged good. And the voices in my head urged me down the path to self-destruction. Not for the first time.”
Ultimately, Miller’s weight gain was in reaction to the painful time in his life, and food seemed to provide temporarily relief from his mental woes as he confessed in his post, “And I put on weight. Big f—ing deal”.
Miller went on to admit that the image of him in the red Tee presently serves as a reminder of the period of endurance he successfully overcame – despite all the odds.
He urged those with similar challenges to seek the help they deserve and also posted links to organizations dedicated to providing life-saving options to those with suicidal thoughts.
