This past weekend protesters ignored Oprah’s accusations pertaining to “lack of leadership” and decided to go on a field trip to specific in New York City and Oakland where white people comfortably dwell as they indulge mimosas and platters of nourishment.
An orchestrated bust was in order as black demonstrators dressed in black dropped by places like Lallisse, Maialino and Pershing Square to give the surprised diners a quick summary of the tragic events that have prompted their crusade.
The Washington Post reports that – “The protesters, most dressed in black, read the names of African-Americans killed by police punctuated with chant of ‘ashe’, a word from the Yoruba language of West Africa comparable to ‘amen’. Timed by participants, the ritual takes four-and-a-half minutes – since Michael Brown’ body was left on the street for four-and-half hours in Ferguson.”
The protesters also emphasized the urgency of the ongoing issue by dictating the facts, “Every 28 hours, a black person in America is killed by the police”. “These are our brothers and sisters. Today and every day, we honor their lives”.
#BlackBrunch definitely got the message across and it certainly elicited strong reactions from both sides of the spectrum. The looks on the faces of the ones who were paid the unexpected visit is priceless and illustrates the deep divide between two groups of people who are currently trying to adequately exist.
