Just when you think every possible angle in the world of Reality TV has been tackled – something else comes along to prove that the genre is basically a bottomless pit of possibilities.
An Iraqi television show has jumped on a new concept of giving convicted terrorists the uncomfortable task of meeting the families whose lives have been irrevocably changed for the worst due to their tragic actions.
In the Grip of the Law showcases the prisoners in full custody regalia as they survey the scene of their crimes while being interrogated by the show host – Ahmed Hassan. This is accompanied by a montage of the events that transpired during and after the bombings including collected evidence that demonstrate the participation of the guilty party.
Then the cringe-worthy moment when the convicts are introduced to the families of their victims who don’t hold back when it comes to expressing their anger and inability to dutifully forgive the culprits responsible for their loss.
For the most part – the terrorists take in all the insults hurled at them while trying to appear morose and remorseful.
The show has garnered quite a following according to France 24 – one of the networks that added it to its lineup.
Only time will tell if it becomes an option in the States – we are certainly not holding our breath.
