Conan O’Brien played host to the MTV Movie Awards Sunday night and he was expectedly up to the task of navigating a show that is fondly revered for showcasing splatters of unpredictability, layers of controversy and heaps of R-Rated fun, all buttered up and ready to serve.
Sunday’s telecast was somewhat tame compared to its predecessors, but nonetheless it proved to be adequately engrossing. The best parts? Oscar-winner Jared Leto receiving his Best Onscreen Transformation award for his role in Dallas Buyers Club. It was once again an awesome experience watching him expertly handle his amazing tresses (are guys allowed to have hair that beautiful?), but what really got us going was the joyous reunion between Leto and the gorgeously decked out Lupita Nyong’o. Can these two make it official already?
Anther highlight was the much-anticipated performance provided by rapper Eminem, who disturbingly looks exactly the way he did back in “The Slim Shady” days, and superstar Rihanna, who both reunited to unleash their new wonder – “Monster”.
The festivities took a somber turn when actress Jordana Brewster, of Fast and Furious fame took the stage to remember her good friend and on-screen partner in crime, actor Paul Walker, who tragically passed away at the age of 40 last November in a car crash. It was a touching tribute, featuring a collage of Walker’s films along with images of his work with ROWW (Reach Out Worldwide), the organization he founded to provide relief via first responders to areas handicapped by natural disasters.
But the most touching moments were courtesy of those who knew him best. Co-star and “brother”, Vin Diesel expressed his loss simply, “I wish the world could’ve seen how special a brother he was”. And Brewster gave a heartfelt speech while desperately trying to maintain her composure. But she managed to get through it, and ended with a perfect summarization of what made Walker so unique, “For Paul, every day was an adventure to be tackled and he wanted to make a difference in this world, but he never asked for credit or glory. He was just a really good guy”.
Another painful reminder that “Only the Good Die Young”.
Mark Wahlberg showed up to receive his Generation Award, with support from his Entourage, as the stars of the cult show participated in the presentation. The former Calvin Klein model was appreciative enough but couldn’t resist a stab at some raunchy humor. The F-word was generously strewn all over his acceptance speech, as he acknowledged the “age factor” in compliance with his recent honor.
Not a bad way to spend a Sunday night – but the real attraction was and always is the fashionable arrivals. There weren’t too many standouts but we managed to isolate four looks that caught our attention, and it’s no surprise that Lupita Nyong’o made it to the top of the list. We hope that girl never runs out of steam!
