Emmys 2015 Draws All-Time Low Ratings Despite Historic Wins

Written by admin in at 12:49 am

Sunday’s Emmy Awards, may have hit all the right notes in the emotional realm, but surprisingly the numbers prove that most chose to get their updates from social media as opposed to sitting through the telecast.

Despite Andy Samberg’s decent turn as the host of the night, even he was unable to woo enough viewers into tuning in which led to less than stellar ratings for FOX. The Emmy’s have always struggled to maintain a steady stream of fans but after the dismal results it will definitely be back to the drawing board for next year’s show.

For those of us who braved the offering, The 67th Emmy Awards proved to be an emotionally charged one – thanks to the winners who for once actually deserved their moment in the spotlight. Viola Davis made history as the first black woman to secure a Best Actress in a Drama Series for her stunningly portrayal of Annalise Keating in ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder, and her acceptance speech was even more profound, as Davis beautifully acknowledged the special moment and paid homage to her fellow nominees and women of color – who continue to juggle the challenges of being part of an industry that barely validates them.

Uzo Aduba got to claim another Emmy for her turn as “Crazy Eyes” on the Netflix hit show Orange is the New Black. The American-born Nigerian actress was graciously appreciative and affectingly dumbfounded at being awarded Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series – two years in a row.

Regina King, was also give an opportunity to shine as she was appropriately recognized for her impeccable performance in the intense drama, American Crime. King who nabbed the award for Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, beat out a slew of nominees from cult favorite, American Horror Story:Freak Show which was an impressive feat in itself.

Mad Men’s tortured protagonist, Don Draper would have thought Jon Hamm’s long awaited win for Best Actor in a Drama Series was “just swell”. Hamm finally got the public adulation that has eluded him during his tenure on the show that delightfully altered the landscape of series television.

But without a doubt, the biggest winner of the night was comedian Tracy Morgan who emerged in a surprising appearance to present the top prize of the night to HBO’s Game of Thrones. Morgan first public appearance since his horrific car accident last year, was received with thunderous applause and a standing ovation. Looking reasonably contained, he graciously cracked a couple of jokes about his long standing ordeal – convincing fans that he is almost back to form.

All in all Emmys 2015 will be remembered as the year of historical wins and the perfect welcome for the Comeback Kid.
