Vin Diesel is in the middle of reviving the xXx franchise and based on the images and videos that populate his Facebook and Instagram page – it looks filming for The Return of Xander Cage is going quite well.
Another franchise that continues to defy all the odds has to be Fast & Furious – the global phenomenon that continues to be a force to reckon with even after the tragic passing of actor Paul Walker who died in a car crash while on hiatus from filming the seventh installment.
His death brought production to a halt before resuming a couple of months later. Furious 7 opened in theaters last spring and shattered the box office both at home and abroad. The gorgeous tribute to Walker was also a major incentive for fans to make the effort to see the late star on the big screen for the very last time.
Diesel always hinted that there would be three more films required to complete the saga and a couple of weeks ago, we were treated to both the official title and date for Fast 8 which will drop on April 14, 2017 and will be set in New York City.
Late Tuesday afternoon, fans were gifted with the release dates of the 9th and 10th installments that have been scheduled for release on April 19, 2019 and April 2, 2021, respectively.
The actor and former bouncer used Instagram as his platform of choice to share the exciting news, with a caption that read: “The studio asked me to release some very big Fast news”. “As most of you know I like to stay in character (for an unrelated filn currently shooting) for the most part when given the opportunity to make magic. However, it was Torreto Tuesday and the studio gave me big news to share…So I will share it”.
It’s safe to assume that all of the main cast will be back for another ride, although based on actress Jordana Brewster’s connection to Walker’s character, Brian O’Connor who had to be retired in order to secure a meaningful sendoff – it’s not quite clear how that will affect her screen time but either way it’s hard to imagine that she won’t factor in somehow since she is in fact a Torreto.
Reaction to the news has been mostly positive with a select few expressing regret that the franchise is moving full speed ahead despite the absence of one if its core members.
It isn’t surprising that Universal is gearing up for another round of Fast movies – Furious 7 garnered an impressive $1.515 billion worldwide and currently ranks as the sixth-highest grossing movie of all time.
The next three films will most likely follow suit due to the massive worldwide appeal of the franchise and the intense loyalty of fans that have been following the global exploits of the Fast family for almost twenty years.
