Idris Elba may be too “urban” for to play James Bond according to naysayers but he seems to be a perfect fit for Luther the character he plays in the gritty cop drama that bears the same name.
The British actor who is garnering rave reviews in the recent Netflix release, Beasts of No Nation, will be back for one night to reprise his role as John Luther – the brooding and tortured detective, whose chaotic trajectory has led him to deal with the brutal murder of his wife, the devastating loss of his friend and co-worker, the betrayal at the hands of his once trusted colleagues and the ill-fated love affair with a seductive and brilliant serial killer played The Affair’s Ruth Wilson.
The three-hour special is set to air on Dec. 17 at 9 p.m. and according to BBC America – the stakes are even higher as the battered crime solver is forced to take on a case involving a dangerously vile serial killer who has ravenous appetite for humans. The twist that follows threatens to almost destroy the already defeated detective.
In addition to Elba, Wilson will also be back and that pairing alone should encourage most viewers to eagerly tune in.
Elba, 43, has a few projects waiting in the pipeline, including Star Trek Beyond and Zootopia. He also lends his vocals to Finding Dory and The Jungle Book.
And if Daniel Craig is certain about relinquishing his Bond gig – we might witness the first ever “urban” Bond in the not so distant future.
Fingers crossed!
