Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington has been known to work behind the camera for film work most notably 2002’s Antwone Fisher and The Great Debaters (2007).
But he is now ready to officially join the family at Shondaland by marking his foray into directing a primetime TV show for the very first time. It has been confirmed by multiple outlets that Washington will in fact helm episode nine of Grey’s Anatomy.
Viola Davis posted this pic on Twitter last year – of Washington during a table read of HTGAWM
This is the hit show’s 12th season and as surprising as it may be to have Washington helming one of the episodes – he does have a longstanding relationship with one of the series’ executive producers – Debbie Allen, who has also directed more than a handful of episodes on all the shows that have been enviably regulated to the TGIT roster.
Allen’s influence also gives her the power to hire other women directors, which undoubtedly helps to bridge the gap when it comes to diversity and hiring practices in an industry that still refuses to succumb to the inevitable.
Washington is definitely not a woman or a rookie but we’re sure he will relish the opportunity to leave his stamp on one of the hottest shows on TV. It is also proof that the small screen is consistently luring big name stars in every capacity.
There is no word yet on the storyline but we can’t imagine that it would be anything but memorable.
