Cinematic genius and die-hard New Yorker, Woody Allen has contributed more than his share to the library of excellence nestled in American cinema. Classics like Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, and Crimes and Misdemeanors have virtually shaped the trajectory for future filmmakers who can only dream of matching Allen’s particular brand of delivery.
Despite battling serious allegations of sexual assault stemming from his daughter which posed for an awkward time at last year’s Golden Globes when longtime friend and collaborator, Diane Keaton accepted the lifetime achievement award on his behalf and seized the opportunity to praise the absent recipient.
But it looks like Allen has managed to survive the hump and is moving on to greener pastures thanks a new ambitious project that quite frankly seems rather unexpected for the otherwise sedate thespian.
Allen will write and direct a half-hour TV series for Amazon that will be slated for Amazon Prime There is no title yet and the cast hasn’t been announced but the deal is official and Roy Price, Vice President of Amazon Studios released a statement to sum up the exciting new venture, “Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series”.
It will be interesting to watch how the famed director will orchestrate his transition to the small screen – hopefully he will carryover his innate ability to produce endearingly timeless characters.
But Allen is wading into this new territory placidly – as evident in his response, “I don’t know how I got to into this. I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this.”
We are betting on the exact opposite!
