It’s that time again! The Film Society of Lincoln Center (FCLC) and African Film Festival, Inc. (AFF) are joining forces once again to unleash a slew of inspirational and thought-provoking films via The 20th New York African Film Festival (NYAFF).
The festival dates are April 3-9, and this year is particularly special due to the nostalgic theme attached to the festivities – Looking Back, Looking Forward: 20 Years Of The New York African Festival.
As with any milestone, it’s always critical to pay homage to the past in order to truly appreciate and re-define the future successfully. The films getting unique exposure this time around have been purposely selected to highlight and celebrate the vibrant heritage of the continent in a historically way as well as enthusiastically usher in fresh talent, as they seamlessly dictate the tone for the next generation.
Famed Senegalese director Ousmane Sembene, one of the endearing pioneers of early African cinema, will be celebrated during this process, as well as the legendary Malian photographer Malick Sidibe.
The newbies on the scene include films like Death for Sale, Burn it up Djassa and Nairobi Half Life, these films are an indication of what the new regime has in store for us.
There will be plenty opportunity to immerse yourself in the creative vibe of the festival since The NYAFF will continue its run throughout April and May at Columbia University’s Institute of African Studies, Mayles Cinema Institute and the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s BAMcinematek.
It should be prove to be a vibrantly satisfying season and another evidential explanation for the global eruption of the African Diaspora.
