Suicide Squad actress Margot Robbie has just secured her next role and it’s a rather unexpected choice which will could translate into a disastrous mess or an engrossing gem.
Robbie will go back in time and relive an episode in sports history that much like the OJ Simpson trial – captivated the nation due to the salacious nature of the events that unfolded in public view.
The epic tale of beloved American figure skater Nancy Kerrigan and disgraced rival Tonya Harding is the stuff that Hollywood goes mad for and in this case – the log line has already been brilliantly crafted.
Back in 1994, two young women from opposite ends of the tracks harbored one daring dream – to be the darling of the Winter Olympics that were to take place that same year.
Harding had paid her dues and was considered one of the most promising and formidable competitors of her sport. At the age of 21 – she won the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and took second place in the World Championships.
She was at the top of her game and was determined to maintain her enviable position at all costs.
At least it seemed that way to the champion skater’s ex-husband and one of her bodyguards who both plotted to ensure Harding’s eventual victory by hiring someone to break Kerrigan’s legs a month before the Games.
The brutal attack left Kerrigan with a badly bruised leg and forced her to exit the competition. Harding ended up winning but once her involvement in the attack was revealed – she was permanently removed from the U.S. Figure Skating Association.
She never professionally recovered from the scandal and pretty much disappeared from the limelight – until now.
Robbie’s portrayal in I, Tonya will definitely open up old wounds as well as resurrect a measure of fascination with the woman who is still one of America’s most loathed athletes.
No director has been attached yet – since the project is still in its early stages.
