Gender equality is sadly still an issue that needs to be tackled and some of the world’s most esteemed entertainers are banding together to help eradicate the debilitating symptoms that refuse to disappear, despite centuries of protests.
Oprah Winfrey, Charlize Theron, Shonda Rhimes, Tina Fey, and Ashley Judd are among the celebs who have signed the letter curated by ONE campaign that appeals to leaders around the world to join in the quest to help propel the initiative of female empowerment – which includes the right to a full fledged education as well as the fight to end HIV and malnutrition.
The sense of urgency that is inspiring even the likes of Robert Redford, Elton John and Muhammed Ali to also proactively lend their support – stems from the dismal numbers that prove the gross negligence of young girls who are systematically deprived and even denied the right to attend school. This has contributed to the increasing problem with illiteracy which affects at least 500 million girls globally.
The signed letter was purposely released two days before International Women’s Day, and outlines the current deplorable state of affairs, “Nowhere on earth do women have as many opportunities as men. Nowhere. The Fight for gender equality is global”.
ONE campaign also took to Twitter to share the letter with followers and encourage the active use of the assigned hashtag #PoveryIsSexist.
