Living in New York City is no walk in the park – unless you enjoy skyrocketing rent and being confined to a box that challenges your ability to find your basics on a daily basis.
Those of us who enjoy punishing ourselves for the mere pleasure of pursuing unrealized goals have developed a thick skin and a level of acceptance of how far we can go The Big Apple. But we assume that those who have been lucky enough to experience fame and fortune have some immunity against the elements that douse ordinary people.
Oscar-winning actress Dianne Wiest, whose memorable turn in Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters earned her the golden statue, is currently looking for a place to live because her present abode is now above her pay grade.
Wiest confessed recently confessed to the New York Times, that due to financial constraints, she is unable to afford her apartment, “I have to move out of my apartment soon”.
The 66-year-old actress, who also won an Oscar for her turn in Bullets Over Broadway, isn’t working as regularly as she would like but that still doesn’t cause her to accept just any role.
Based on her immaculate body of work both in film and theater, it is hard to imagine an actress of her caliber being regulated to the sidelines – struggling to maintain a lifestyle in a city that takes more than it gives.
But reality bites and unless you are Meryl Streep’s clone, chances are you will need a lot of luck to keep up the momentum.
But Wiest is secure enough to wait for the parts to come along, “I think that if it’s meant to happen, it will happen”.
