The Emmy nominations were announced today and as always it was a reminder that based on the level of viewership and general popularity coupled with a stringent formula, it’s hard to get too excited when award season arrives.
HBO’s freshman entrée, Girls scored a nod for Best Comedy and Lead Actress in a Comedy for the show’s creator Lena Dunham. After all the hype and praise heaped on Dunham, she probably expected a nomination or two. Another major crowd pleaser, Downtown Abbey also found its way into some of the major categories, including Best Drama.
The staples of the circuit including Mad Men, Modern Family, The Good Wife, and Breaking and Bad all predictably made the cut.
There may have been a few glaring snubs like the absence of Laura Linney (The Big C) and John Slattery (Mad Men) but for the most part, the announcements presented no deviation from the norm.
