From Viola Davis’ poignant acceptance speech after edging out The Iron Lady’s Meryl Streep to snag The Best Actress award for The Help, to Octavia Spencer’s stunned recognition after she was announced Best Supporting Actress for the same film, the 17th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards certainly had its share of dramatic moments.
The Help also took home Best Acting ensemble which is a true testament to the fact the summer sleeper pushed all the right buttons and has the potential to become a beloved classic.
Some of the other winners of the night were somewhat predicable. Judd Apatow’s Bridesmaids got the Best comedy award and critics’ darling George Clooney wont the Best Actor award for his much hailed performance in The Descendants.
It was nice to see veteran actor Christopher Plummer get the Best Supporting award for his inspiring work in Beginners. Another notable win was Michel Hazanavicius who was honored for directing his black and white masterpiece The Artist.
All in all it was a pretty low-key night that seemed to serve as the more sedate version of The Golden Globes. It was also an exciting reminder that awards season has officially begun.
