This has to be the best casting news since God knows when. Two of the sexiest men in the industry are pairing up to resurrect Shakespeare’s most lauded piece of art – Othello.
Daniel Craig, who recently dominated headlines due to his public declaration that he is done roaming the world as James Bond (he was kidding of course), will play the role of Iago, while Oyelowo, fresh off his Oscar-worthy turn as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in the critically-acclaimed and Oscar-nominated Selma, will step into the role of Othello.
Both men are highly suited for this ambitious venture that will be hosted by the New York Theatre Workshop in the fall of 2016. It will be an intimate affair, as the space comprises of about 199 seats. There is no word yet on when avid fans can mark off their calendars but it will presumably be a limited run which is usually the case with high-profile performances.
This is an exciting opportunity for the New York Theatre as they welcome the first Shakespeare production since 1990. The company’s artistic director, James C Nicola expressed the mission of the non-profit organization in a statement to The Guardian and why this latest news will help usher them in the right direction. “This production is an opportunity for New York Theatre Workshop to do what it aspires to do – foster the growth and accomplishment of the artists we believe in”.
If this is what it takes to achieve that goal – we agree wholeheartedly! Both Craig and Oyelowo are beyond qualified for the assignment they have been bequeathed.
Craig, who is about to set the box office alight with his latest entry Spectre, which will hit theaters next month, began his career on the stage.
Oyelowo also brings his expertise to the table after being the first black actor ever to tackle Henry VI for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
And ironically both men have something in common. Craig is currently the man giving life to James Bond and Oyelowo is following suit as he is poised to play Bond in the audio version curated by Anthony Horowitz with the blessing of Ian Fleming’s estate.
This is definitely a project worth following as more details pour in!
