{"id":3337,"date":"2012-06-14T17:49:41","date_gmt":"2012-06-14T17:49:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/?p=3337"},"modified":"2012-06-14T17:51:58","modified_gmt":"2012-06-14T17:51:58","slug":"trendy-tv-report-shonda-rhimes-blasts-bunheads-for-lack-of-diversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/14\/trendy-tv-report-shonda-rhimes-blasts-bunheads-for-lack-of-diversity\/","title":{"rendered":"Trendy TV Report: Shonda Rhimes Blasts \u2018BunHeads\u2019 For Lack of Diversity"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start --><p><strong>Shonda Rhimes<\/strong> vented her frustration via twitter over the lack of diversity on the new ABC show <strong>\u2018Bunheads\u2019<\/strong> starring Broadway darling <strong>Sutton Foster<\/strong> and Gilmore Girls alumn <strong>Kelly Bishop<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/2012\/06\/14\/trendy-tv-report-shonda-rhimes-blasts-bunheads-for-lack-of-diversity\/bunheads_510\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3338\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3338\" title=\"bunheads_510\" src=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/bunheads_510.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/bunheads_510.jpg 510w, http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/bunheads_510-300x234.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Rhimes who continues to have a successful and profitable relationship with the\u201dAlphabet Network \u201cthanks to hit shows, <strong>\u2018Grey\u2019s Anatomy\u2019<\/strong> and the recently installed <strong>\u2018Scandal\u2019<\/strong>, couldn\u2019t resist expressing her disappointment that <strong>\u2018Bunheads\u2019<\/strong> a show that recalls the energy and enthusiasm of the dance scene that propelled 80\u2019s\u00a0staple <strong>FAME<\/strong> into the never dimming spotlight, doesn\u2019t feature any ethnic actors.<\/p>\n<p>She tweeted, <strong>Hey @abcfbunheads: really? You couldn\u2019t cast even ONE young dancer of color so I could feel good about my kid watching this show? NOT ONE?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shonda Rhimes<\/strong> who is African-American is highlighting an issue that even she has to admit she has fallen victim to when you consider the fact <strong>\u2018Grey\u2019s Anatomy\u2019<\/strong> has evolved into a show that has a mostly Caucasian cast, who seem to be the primary focus of most of the major storylines and love triangles. Yet, Rhimes created \u2018Anatomy\u2019 but ultimately had to succumb to the formulaic tendencies of most shows on major networks that tend to cast people of color in secondary roles while the leads are almost always white.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps I would\u00a0be more\u00a0more apt to support Rhimes\u2019 need to vent if she was maximizing her enviable position to help eradicate the problem but so far<strong> \u2018Scandal\u2019<\/strong>, starring <strong>Kerry Washington<\/strong> is the only show that features an African-American female in the lead role. It\u2019s refreshing to see that she has settled into a groove that is allowing her to finally call the shots in a way that befits someone of her stature, and hopefully there will be a continued level of consistency with her casting choices.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, the fight continues in the formidable arena of white vs. ethnic and the stats are not very encouraging but the awareness level is at an all time high.
