The Industry\u2019s elite gathered to officially kick off award season, from the fashion to the winners, last night definitely lived up to all the hype and excitement.<\/p>\n

Comedic genius Ricky Gervais<\/strong>, was back ready to entertain and effortlessly call out the rich and famous for being rich and famous.<\/p>\n

This time around, it was clear that the powers that be learnt their lesson from last year’s fiasco and so Gervais was a lot more sedate and the show seemed more regulated than the last time. The jokes were kept to a minimal and the host had considerably limited screen time. Except for Madonna\u2019s flawless comeback to Gervais\u2019 jab about her being \u201cJust Like A Virgin\u201d, and George Clooney\u2019s homage to Michael Fassbender\u2019s member in the film Shame<\/strong>, the show\u2019s format was devoid of any dramatics. However the host scored major points with his dialogue about being told to refrain from any Mel Gibson<\/strong> jokes and and any references to the Jodie Foster<\/strong> movie that Gibson regrettably starred in, The Beaver<\/strong>, which got less than glowing reviews.<\/p>\n

The winners of the night the echoed the same themes from past award shows. The expected mixed in with the unexpected and the completely ludicrous.<\/p>\n

The Expected: Octavia Spencer<\/strong> winning Best Supporting Actress for The Help<\/strong>, Meryl Streep<\/strong> taking home Best Actress for The Iron Lady<\/strong>, George Clooney<\/strong> winning Best Actor for The Descendants<\/strong>, and Michelle Williams<\/strong>\u00a0taking home Best Actress in a Motion Picture \u2013 Comedy or Musical for My Week With Marilyn<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Unexpected: Martin Scorsese<\/strong> beating out Alexander Payne<\/strong> (The Descendants<\/strong>) and Michel Hazanvicius<\/strong> (The Artist<\/strong>) to win the Best Director trophy for Hugo<\/strong>. It was a pleasant surprise to watch\u00a0Idris Elba<\/strong> walk away with Best Performance By An Actor title for the mini-series Luther<\/strong>. The fact that Showtime\u2019s Episodes<\/strong>, was even nominated was a shocker!<\/p>\n

Completely Ludicrious: Kelsey Grammar<\/strong> winning Best Performance By An Actor In A Television Series was a nasty joke. Damian Lewis<\/strong> from the Showtime<\/strong> hit,\u00a0Homeland<\/strong> was robbed! Matt LeBlanc\u2019s win for Episodes<\/strong> was just as senseless as the show itself. There must be a better way to help boost the comeback of a forgettable actor.<\/p>\n

So one down, and about three more to go, but in the meantime, we can feast our eyes on the top looks that graced the red carpet.<\/p>\n
