According to the Media Action Network for Asian Americans, Scott didn\u2019t hold true to the identities of the characters in the book authored by Andy Weir and instead picked Caucasian actors to embody the roles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/75.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14134\" src=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/75.jpeg\" alt=\"75\" width=\"640\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/75.jpeg 640w, http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/75-300x211.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>MANAA founding president, Guy Aoki didn\u2019t hold back when calling out the Hollywood heavyweight in an open letter for succumbing yet again to the industry standard at the expense of perfectly gifted minorities who always seem to garner the short end of the stick \u2013 \u201cThis feelgood movie, which has attracted Oscar buzz, shouldn\u2019t get any awards for casting\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The anger stems from the fact that actors Mackenzie Davis and Chiwetel EJiofor both got assigned roles that were according to the book &#8211; clearly borne of Asian characters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/75-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14135\" src=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/75-1.jpeg\" alt=\"75-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/75-1.jpeg 640w, http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/75-1-300x211.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time that Scott has been called out for taking the safe road by opting for big name stars instead of risking the consequences of literally playing by the book. His 2014 biblical extravaganza, starring Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton came under intense fire, which he deflected by explaining the shallow business of show business. \u201cI\u2019ve got no regrets on anything with Exodus\u201d. \u201cI\u2019m very proud of it but when they start saying, \u201cWell gee, shouldn\u2019t Moses have been black and shouldn\u2019t the wife be Ethiopian\u201d, well I don\u2019t know, I wasn\u2019t there. And also, I would never have got it, it would have been limited\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whitewashing roles isn\u2019t a new trend but rather an easy cop out to appease studio heads that are blinded by dollar signs and franchise envy. There is no indication that this destructive practice will cease anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p>But the current president of MANAA \u2013 Aki Aleong isn\u2019t willing to remain silent, \u201cThis insulting practice of whitewashing has got to stop\u201d. \u201cAlarmingly, it has been increasing in frequency.
