Earlier this year <a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2015\/04\/meryl-streep-nywift-establish-writers-lab-for-women-over-40-1201412648\/\">she announced an initiative <\/a>geared towards women over forty who have stories to tell but lack the platform to voice them.<\/p>\n<p>For all intents and purposes \u2013 Streep has always said and done all the right things \u2013 until now.<\/p>\n<p>Her recent choice to don a Tee shirt that reads \u201cI\u2019d rather be a rebel than a slave\u201d in an effort to help promote her upcoming film <em>Suffragette<\/em> that also stars <em>The Great Gatsby\u2019s<\/em> Carey Mulligan has proven to be unrelentingly detrimental. Emmeline Pankhurst \u2013 the character Streep portrays in the film, uttered those incriminating words and despite the historical significance behind them, we can\u2019t ignore the fact that considering the current racial climate, resurrecting ill-willed phrases will always be categorized as an unfortunate mistake.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/CQJopF9UAAAqMIJ.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14095\" src=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/CQJopF9UAAAqMIJ.jpg\" alt=\"CQJopF9UAAAqMIJ\" width=\"599\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/CQJopF9UAAAqMIJ.jpg 599w, http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/CQJopF9UAAAqMIJ-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But Streep doesn\u2019t seem to comprehend the levity of her actions and proudly models her Tee-shirt with the backing of a an outdated declaration by her supposed mascot. Here is the full statement from the past \u2013 \u201cKnow that women, once convinced that they are doing what is right, that their rebellion is just, will go on, no matter what the difficulties, no matter what the dangers, so long as there is a woman alive to hold up the flag of rebellion. I would rather be a rebel than a slave\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Lately white actresses like Anne Hathaway, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Liv Tyler to name a few have been crying foul when it comes to the recent state of affairs in Hollywood as it pertains to the treatment of actresses of a certain age. This public outcry is particularly notable because it captures the essence of \u201cwhite privilege\u201d at it\u2019s best. Each of these women has shamelessly enjoyed the benefits of being the designated ing\u00e9nues of their era \u2013 but now that they are being replaced by younger more efficient models like Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Felicity Jones, the list goes on \u2013 the reality of their instinctual greed is hitting them like a ton of bricks. Suddenly they are no longer included in the \u201csought-after\u201d bunch, which means they actually have to work for a living.<\/p>\n<p>So consumed with their downgraded status, they fail to even fathom what actresses of color continuously contend with which in addition to having to juggle sexism includes the stark realization that no matter how good they are \u2013 they will never match the momentum of their fairer counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong\u2019o will never enjoy the revelations of a materialized talent in the same fashion that the less talented Julia Roberts indulged in after portraying a whore in the classic entr\u00e9e <em>Pretty Woman<\/em>. That astutely sums up what it\u2019s like to be a black actress in Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>But neither Streep nor her army of clones will ever adequately internalize this truth and it\u2019s not because they don\u2019t want to \u2013 it is due to the severe effects of white privilege.
