{"id":13423,"date":"2015-01-16T01:09:10","date_gmt":"2015-01-16T01:09:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/?p=13423"},"modified":"2015-01-16T01:09:10","modified_gmt":"2015-01-16T01:09:10","slug":"oscar-nominations-reveal-complete-whitewash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/2015\/01\/16\/oscar-nominations-reveal-complete-whitewash\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscar Nominations Reveal a Complete Whitewash"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start --><p>It was Oscar fever Thursday morning as the nominations were announced at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/full-list-academy-award-oscar-nominations-2015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13424\" src=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/full-list-academy-award-oscar-nominations-2015.jpg\" alt=\"full-list-academy-award-oscar-nominations-2015\" width=\"630\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/full-list-academy-award-oscar-nominations-2015.jpg 630w, http:\/\/mytrendybuzz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/full-list-academy-award-oscar-nominations-2015-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>We all know that nobody really cares about any of the categories except the main ones and once the big reveal was made \u2013 the overwhelming sentiment hinged on the fact that it was an all-white fiesta, with no talents of color represented.<\/p>\n<p>This certainly isn\u2019t the first time that the Oscar nominations have been devoid of black actors, actresses and directors, but maybe the sting is harder to bear because of the present racial climate tormenting the nation.<\/p>\n<p>It is hard to escape the great divide between black and white performers and nobody put it better than<strong> Chris Rock<\/strong>. The piece he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/top-five-filmmaker-chris-rock-753223\">penned for <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> <\/a>received a lot of exposure and gasps from readers who got the inside scoop about the industry in a way that was damning and refreshingly honest.<\/p>\n<p>But acknowledging a problem doesn\u2019t necessarily solve it and after the unveiling of nominees, it was clear that there is still a lot of work to do when it comes to securing an ample level of diversity.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest surprise was the absence of <strong>David Oyelowo<\/strong> who garnered a Golden Globe nomination for his much hailed portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but failed to charm the Academy. <em>Selma<\/em> director, <strong>Ava DuVernay<\/strong> also got a Golden Globe nod, which made her the first African-American woman to be honored in that category, but unfortunately she wasn\u2019t able to make history again. But the film did manage to get recognized in the prestigious best picture category.<\/p>\n<p>Other snubs included<strong> Jennifer Aniston<\/strong> who gave an affecting performance in <em>Cake<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0<strong>Amy<\/strong> <strong>Adams<\/strong> won the Globe for her performance in <em>Big Eyes<\/em> but didn\u2019t get a nomination. A few years ago, another actress suffered the same fate \u2013 <strong>Nicole Kidman<\/strong> won the Golden Globe for her excellent turn in <em>To Die For<\/em> but failed to get a an Oscar nod.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of it slides in perfectly with the <strong>BAFA\u2019s<\/strong> which should have been the gauge for the Oscar nominations since it seems the British have taken over the forecast for winners and losers.<\/p>\n<p>It is hard to fully appreciate the offerings of award shows due to the innate inconsistencies that plague them. They also have a tendency to make you wonder if the recipients have the option of buying their way into the exclusive club (<strong>George Clooney<\/strong> getting the lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes?!).<\/p>\n<p>Either way, it is a time to celebrate the achievements of cinema while also looking to the future with eager anticipation as up and coming hopefuls dream of their day in the sun.
